What electric cars pay in motor vehicle tax in Jura, how the tax is calculated and what is changing.
In Jura the tax has been calculated since July 2024 on gross weight, power and CO2 emissions. Electric cars pay no CO2 component and also get a 20 % reduction until 30 June 2027; under current law this reduction then ends. For weight and power they pay the same as a combustion car.
Combination of gross weight, power and CO2: T = (P x A) + (kW x B) + (g CO2/km x C), each in progressive bands. Weight: CHF 0.075 per kg up to 1,200 kg, CHF 0.280 per kg from 1,201 to 1,800 kg, CHF 0.290 per kg above. Power: CHF 0.10 per kW up to 52 kW, 0.20 up to 75 kW, 0.28 up to 111 kW, 0.32 up to 162 kW, 0.34 above. CO2: CHF 0.45 per g up to 118 g, 1.35 up to 149 g, 1.80 up to 193 g, 2.25 above. Maximum CHF 1,015 a year.
Passenger cars with 100 % electric propulsion get a 20 % reduction on the tax amount. It applies for the first three years after the new system was introduced, from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027 (decree on the taxation of road vehicles and boats, RSJU 741.611, in force since 6 March 2024). Because an electric car emits 0 g of CO2, the CO2 component of the formula drops out; weight and power are taxed normally. A heavy, powerful electric car therefore pays a noticeable amount.
No specific reduction is provided for plug-in hybrids registered as passenger cars. They pay the normal formula including the CO2 component based on their official rating (first registration from 1 January 2021: WLTP value from the registration document; before that, the NEDC value plus 23 g/km).
The 20 % reduction for electric cars ends on 30 June 2027. No extension or follow-up rule is known; unless something changes, electric cars will then pay the full tax on weight and power (without a CO2 component).
Still open: whether the 20 % reduction will be extended beyond 30 June 2027. That plug-in hybrids get no reduction is inferred from the absence of any rule and is not expressly confirmed.
