What electric cars pay in motor vehicle tax in Uri, how the tax is calculated and what is changing.
In Uri, road traffic tax is based on gross weight. Battery-powered cars (electric, hydrogen) permanently pay two thirds of the normal tax, i.e. one third less than a combustion car of the same weight. On 29 November 2026 Uri votes on higher tax rates; the EV reduction would remain.
Gross weight per registration document (rounded up to 10 kg). Cars: up to 1,500 kg CHF 1.80 per 10 kg, up to 2,000 kg CHF 2.00 per 10 kg, over 2,000 kg CHF 2.20 per 10 kg, each applied to the whole weight; minimum tax CHF 50; amounts rounded up to whole francs (Verordnung über die Strassenverkehrssteuern, RB 50.1413).
The standard tax is reduced to two thirds for battery-powered vehicles and those treated as equivalent (Art. 1 para. 3 let. a RB 50.1413). The Office for Road and Shipping Traffic names electric and hydrogen vehicles. The reduction has no time limit; the minimum tax of CHF 50 still applies. There are no other discounts based on energy efficiency or CO2.
The ordinance provides no reduction for plug-in hybrids; they are taxed at the normal weight-based rate.
On 27 August 2025, as part of the 2024 savings package, the cantonal parliament (Landrat) adopted an ordinance change raising taxes by about 10 %: cars would pay CHF 2.00 / 2.20 / 2.50 per 10 kg (up to 1,500 / up to 2,000 / over 2,000 kg), minimum tax CHF 55. Vehicles with zero-emission drive would still be reduced to two thirds. A referendum was successful; the popular vote takes place on 29 November 2026. If accepted, the cantonal government sets the effective date.
Battery-electric car, gross weight 2,300 kg: normal tax 230 × CHF 2.20 = CHF 506 (as returned by the official ASSV calculator spreadsheet), reduced to two thirds = CHF 337.33, rounded up to CHF 338. Under the tariff put to the vote on 29 Nov 2026 it would be CHF 384 (230 × 2.50 × 2/3, rounded up). Weight chosen as illustration, not a specific model.: CHF 338 per year (source)
Still open: whether plug-in hybrids could count as 'equivalent to battery-powered vehicles'. The ordinance does not define this, and the office's own note only names electric and hydrogen. If the 2025 amendment is accepted, its effective date is not yet set.
