In September 2026, for the first time more than one in three new passenger cars registered in Switzerland was a fully electric car: the BEV share was 35.7%. This page shows how the numbers have developed since January.
auto-schweiz points to record-high fuel prices that strain households and support demand for electric drives. Switzerland still lags behind the European trend and the expectations of the Roadmap Elektromobilität 2025.

“–” means: not stated in the press release. “*” marks values we calculated from the stated figures. “about” stands for rounded figures from auto-schweiz.
First half: By the end of June, fully electric cars rose 20.2% year on year to 27,889 vehicles, and plug-in hybrids rose 24.7% to 14,456 vehicles.
August: BEV registrations rose 48.7% compared with the same month last year, while plug-in hybrids fell 4.3%. Year to date, plug-in vehicles were ahead of conventional hybrids for the first time (37.2% versus 36.7%).
January as a special case: With 14,027 registrations it was, according to auto-schweiz, the weakest registration month of this century. In January, 2,913 fully electric cars were registered, 66% fewer than in December 2025 (8,584). auto-schweiz attributes this to the year-end business, in which dealers and importers tried to avoid CO2 sanctions. Individual months are therefore only of limited significance.
Petrol and diesel: In August, pure petrol cars still made up 20.6% and diesel 5.5% of registrations. Both continue to lose importance.
The longer view: According to auto-schweiz, the BEV share had been between 20 and 23% since 2023. At 26.2% year to date and 35.7% in September, it is now clearly above that.
Which models people buy is shown in the ranking of the best-selling electric cars. What a model costs over five years you can work out in the cost comparisons.
